Updates: April 26-29

Good afternoon parents! I hope you have enjoyed your long weekend. We are in the final stretch of the school year! We all have spring fever, but please join me in reminding your children that we still have a lot of learning left to accomplish in first grade! As they feel the end in sight, they are definitely becoming more chatty and antsy.

Our egg hunt was a rousing success! It was extremely HOT, but the kids were troopers and everyone was able to find all of his/her eggs. Thank you so much for sending all of supplies we needed to make the day a blast!

Homework will go home tomorrow. Please study the spelling words with your child every night. The words always mirror the skills we are working on in class and the words are important for them to know for reading as well as writing. Most all of you have been so faithful to turn the homework in every week! That is such great reinforcement for your child.

During this final nine weeks of school, if you have any questions or concerns and would like to schedule a conference, I will be happy to meet with you. I will absolutely contact you if I need to meet with you. I can always be reached by email mullerl1@duvalschools.org if you just have a question.

The permission slip for our final field trip went home on Thursday. Please return it with the money (no checks please) at your earliest convenience.

Our secret word for the week is Clementine which is the read-aloud we are enjoying right now. Ask your child what is going on in the story!

Updates 4/18-4/22

Happy Sunday, everyone! What a beautiful weekend we are enjoying! I hope you received my email Friday afternoon about the wonderful FREE reading opportunity Pearson Education is funding. If not, please check your email and take a look. It benefits your child as well as our school.

We have a busy week coming up next week! Wednesday is an early dismissal day, so those parents who pick up at school or at the bus stop will need to arrive one hour earlier. Also, there is no school on Friday of this week or Monday of next week! Thursday of this week, (4/21), we will be having our egg hunt and craft day. If you haven't already, please send in your CLEANED OUT gallon milk or water jug. Please don't send it in without cleaning it out first. STINKY! STINKY! Also your child will need to bring in 6 plastic eggs filled with NON-MELTING candy. Please write your child's first and last name in permanent black marker on the eggs.

We welcomed a new friend to our class last week. His name is Logan and he comes to us from the Tampa area. We are so excited to have him and he fits in perfectly with our class!!

Thank you so much for your patience last week with our wacky schedule. It made for a crazy week and by Friday, everyone was ready for the weekend! It was a difficult week, but we survived it and are better because of it.

Report cards went home on Friday. I hope you enjoy those wonderful incentive coupons in the envelopes. These are courtesy of Emily's parents. They are very generous to provide them to us every nine weeks. Please make sure to sign the slip at the bottom of the report card and return it WITH the yellow envelope. With the budget being what it is, we like to recycle as much as we can.

Have a fabulous week and, as always, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at mullerl1@duvalschools.org. The secret word for this week is something we learn about in our reading story this week: friendship.

Updates 4/11/11 - 4/15/11

Good evening parents and students! This is going to be a challenging week for all of us! At Mr. Strickland's request, I will be administering the FCAT test to a third grade class who's teacher is out on maternity leave. This means that there will be a substitute teacher in my class on Monday - Wednesday mornings and all day on Thursday. I have already talked to the students about it and they are prepared. We are flipping our day around a bit so that I can teach the reading in the afternoons. We have a couple of reading tests to take next week and I prefer to give them the tests myself. We also have been asked to keep the students off of the playground for the four days of FCAT testing as some students will be testing all day and the noise from the playground may disturb them. That being said, PLEASE give them as much outside time at home in the afternoons as you can. Fresh air is so critical to all of us! We will be doing some fun activities inside the classroom during the time that we would normally be playing outside.

There were quite a few students who struggled with the spelling test this week. The words are getting much harder, so please make sure to go over the words with them many times throughout the week. We are working on them at school as well, but the reinforcement from home really helps!

The diorama projects were WONDERFUL!! I can tell that the students (and parents) worked very hard on them. I took pictures of all of the students with their dioramas and I will post them on the blog by the end of the week.

Have a wonderful week and the secret word for the week is PATIENCE!!

Updates April 4 - 8

Good morning! I hope you all enjoyed your Spring Break! I know I did! I'm glad the weather decided to redeem itself there at the end of the week. We have a lot going on this week once again. It is an early dismissal week, so for those parents who pick up their children, please remember to pick up an hour earlier on Wednesday. Also, our field trip to the Florida Theatre is on Thursday. We will be leaving the school at 9:00 a.m., so please make sure to have your child to school ON TIME!! Also, please make sure to pack your child a lunch and a drink.
All diorama projects are due on Wednesday, April 6th. I hope your child has enjoyed the freedom of expressing him/herself creatively!
We have media on Friday. Please make sure to return your child's library book by Friday if you haven't already done so. If your child owes money for an overdue book, he or she will not be able to check out another book until that one is paid for.
We have adopted a third grade class to cheer on for FCAT week. The class we have adopted is Ms. Tiberio's class. It is the class that is right next door to us. The kids are very excited about encouraging them through this stressful time! We will be making cards for them, making banners for them, and delivering treats to them throughout the week.

Have a wonderful week and the secret word for this week is SUNSHINE!!
